Oops! Highlander Romance Fail

Shadow Music: A Novel Shadow Music: A Novel by Julie Garwood

My review

rating: 2 of 5 stars
After a few years following the Claybornes, Buchanans, et. al., Garwood has returned to the Highlands in this historical. It is flawed for a romance.

Much of the first half of the book is spent filling in the reader on Highland customs and life as well as the conflict with England at the time. The hero and heroine do not even meet until 1/3 of the way through the book. So the developing emotional relationship between them does not really have enough time to truly develop.

Part of the barrier is perhaps the hero's reluctance truly engage with the heroine. While the strong silent type often works, it seems to fail this time.

The requisite HEA does happen. I do look forward to working my way through the next book to at least see what happens to the rest of the bold Highlanders. I am also hopeful that Garwood will work her way forward to various places in history, ending with a series of contemporary suspense. That was good fun.
