The Big Snark-Off: Heaving Bosoms Edition!

Booktender, have you gone mad?
No, just promoting a way cool book doing actual literary criticism of the romance genre. An in-depth inquiry into the romance novel and its reflection of popular culture.
And never refer to this literature as "bodice-rippers" or the Smart Bitches, Trashy Books posse will come and beat your ass. srsly

Only in libraryland would this be a snark: Congratulations to Kite Runner for being the sole representative of adult lit! Top Ten Most Frequently Challenged Books of 2008 via PLA Blog by Kathleen Hughes on 4/21/09
While related to HDT, this goes far beyond. Still, this is just the thing for those of you wishing to scan your books: diy book scanners on instructables via by jessamyn on 4/20/09

Not surprisingly, we did, in fact have patron poop in the bookdrop last week. I love my job.

Amazon Conspiracy Theories!

From my favorite blog: Amazonfail update, now with delicious speculative theories via Smart Bitches, Trashy Books on 4/13/09

Apparently the dorks are backing down. Still, not backing down enough. They are a company and have the right to do any stupid thing they want, but, geeze, what a way to lose sales!

WTF were they THINKING? And did anybody bother to, oh, I dunno, TEST it?

Some theories from SBTB post:

ham-fisted cataloguing error
"an experiment that blew up in their face"
"books were likely filtered out using the metadata"
"LJer Dely comes up with two other plausible alternative theories, one involving trolls and another involving the systematic flagging of “adult” content by people with agendas. "

"The official word from Amazon, as far as we know, is still that it’s a “glitch,” which falls in line with Patrick Nielsen Hayden’s theory.: '...this is how the world works. A great deal of racism, homophobia, etc., happens not because anyone particularly wants to be racist or homophobic, but because the ground has been tilted that way by arrangements made long ago and if you’re not constantly on the lookout it’s easiest to roll downhill.'"

"bestiality hasn’t been filtered."

"But “Gay and Lesbian”? REALLY? This sort of blanket exception didn’t ding anybody’s radar? (And let’s not even go into the wisdom of implementing a policy to exclude “adult” content in first place, because I’m not sure my blood pressure can take it.)"

If nobody has noticed, I can't tell you how much I heart Smart Bitches, Trashy Books

The Big Snark-Off - Pneumatic Edition

I apparently slowed down on the snarking for Lent. Not everything here is a true snark. Some are simply oddities. And a smug.

Just to prove to all you coasters that the midwest is one helluva lot progressive than you'd like to think. Neener.

I plan to set up a chain of marriage chapels in the Des Moines area to improve the Iowa economy. Because Des Moines is the only place you can get a direct flight to.

Unless you're lucky enough to use Allegiant Air to get to Cedar Rapids. Otherwise, you're sharing the same situation with the bear above.

Breaks, Taking
via A Librarian's Guide to Etiquette by J on 4/8/09
Happy, healthy librarians smoke cigarettes. Smoking librarians get more breaks, take longer breaks, and get outside the library several times per day.

This is true. I gained several pounds after quitting smoking.
