His Soaked Scepter

Make Her Pay (Bullet Catcher, #10)Make Her Pay by Roxanne St. Claire

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Alternate Title: His Wet Scepter

First book I've read on my Android!

Once again, St. Claire brings us a pretty-darn-good contemporary romantic suspense title. Unfortunately, I found that this one had a couple of problems. Not enough to destroy my enjoyment of the book, just a bit flawed.

I found that the emotional connection between the hero and heroine was not as well-developed as I like. It didn't seem as much a development of emotional attachment as much as it seemed an "Oh! I really like this guy!" It's almost as if sex was used in place of emotional development.

Strangely, I found the move from an isolated ship off Florida to an isolated island off Portugal a bit off-putting. I believe this is because during the shift to Portugal, we are introduced to two new characters only mentioned briefly in the first half of the book. For a while, these characters carry the storyline while the hero and heroine are left in the background.

I give St. Claire a lot of points for introducing traditional Gothic elements into the story. The isolated ship. The isolated island. The friendly characters who turn out to be threats and the threatening characters who turn out to be friendly/a love interest.

One bad apple doesn't spoil the whole bunch. I'm looking better to my next St. Claire read.

Would I recommend this book to a contemporary romance reader to read at the airport? Yes

Would I recommend this book to an expert diver? No

Would I recommend this book to a contemporary romance reader who also liked the DaVinci Code? Quite possibly.

Would I recommend this book to a man in a bear suit? Naw, I wouldn't think he would have a great interest in diving in warm waters off the coast of Florida.
