Our "outdoor preacher" was back again today. Always nice to see him. His dedication is inspiring.
Today's message:
Read the Bible! Avoid Hell!
Well, not so bad. The Bible can be dry reading but, what the heck, some food for thought in there. Avoiding hell is always a plus in anybody's book.
Today's statement is missing a few theological steps. First off, it assumes there is a hell. What with all of us being God's children, the idea that we would be sent to hell seems incongruent. I'm not discounting the possibility of hell. In fact, I have asked the Lord to please let me know if there is, in fact, a hell.
For argument's sake, though, let's assume there is a hell.
Our man's statement seems to equate reading the Bible with avoiding hell. If I understand the logic he is applying, I simply must beg to differ. Reading the Bible doesn't get anybody away from hell. Satan himself, if he exists, might just read the Bible. I don't see this theoretical being removing himself from this theoretical hell no matter what he reads. So, there's a fallacy there.
Beyond Satan, I have a problem with, say, evil-doers reading the Bible under the mistaken assumption that the act alone will get them into heaven. Problematic. In a Christian context, and I'm assuming that's the case since the Bible is being featured, there are just a few more things a person must do to go to heaven.
Nope. Just gotta disagree with our man the preacher on this one.
I am also feeling a bit worried for the dude. He's starting to mumble a bit. It took me 4 or 5 repetitions to realize the last phrase was Avoid Hell. Not A Good Sign.
But rock on, preacher-man! You bring character to our little spot in the Libraryland Universe. Your dedication has not gone unnoticed. Be who you are and damn the consequences!
